They play a card game - the more deadly Shadow Game, in some instances - and bam! World is saved. Or, at least, that is the highly simplified plot line. But we're not here for a history lesson, as, again, I'm sure you all have a general idea of the plot of this specific anime. Would you be here otherwise? However, one specific scene impacts this roleplay's little plot. I'm sure you've guessed it by now. The ending. And the Pharaoh passed on and the Millennium Items were buried forever and Yugi found the meaning of life and we all lived happily ever after... or did we? Well, for the most part we did. I mean, Yugi, from what we know of, never lost his title as the King of Games, Kaiba went on to make Duel academy, and everyone else probably went on their merry little ways. But what of the people who never got a say in any of this? We all had our fair share of villains out for the Millennium Items, certainly, for whatever reason, but what about the ones a little late on jumping on the wagon? How exactly did they feel about the precious seven treasures practically vanishing from existence, them not even getting a chance at swiping them from their lucky owners? Naturally, this had a particular group of people quite upset. A particular group of people who just so happened to be a bunch of ambitious little buggers. A particular group of people who had one final plan, one last resort to getting what they wanted.
Enter the reset.
The plan was foolproof. Difficult to discover, difficult to carry out, difficult to - okay, you get the idea. But, difficult as it was to get to successful results, boy were those results successful. Cards can do everything - even set back time and erase a few precious little memories. Figured it out by now? Yep. Again, complete reset. The only people whose memories of the previous time line were to be the five head honchos in the experiment and, while the world was being sent on a smooth ride to the past, they could swipe the artifacts for themselves and get away without any of their original wielders hunting them down, much less even remember their existence in the first place. Or, at least... that was what was supposed to happen. Of course, not all variables are correct and something was just off enough to send things spiraling just a tad bit out of control. Complete mind sweep? Gone. Cut the canons into threes, will you? One third? Successful! Unable to recall their previous life whatsoever. Another third? Eh, close enough. The foggy memories they have now'll be gone within a year's time, sure. Last third? Eh... not so good. Complete recognition of everything that had transpired, just transpired, and how hard they're going to beat down the people who did this to them. Not to mention Duel Monsters has basically been wiped off the face of the universe, it's popularity having decreased where it increased back in the Domino City we all know and love.
While the snatching of the Millennium Items itself was highly successful, there was always the slight problem of their original owners coming back, kicking the tar out of them, taking them back, and setting things right again. Yeah, that's a big no-no. So what to do, hm? Pass them out like candy, obviously! Um... Wait, let me rephrase that. More like choose seven people they could watch like hawks, trust, or easily steal them back from to wield them until all those with memories of the other universe have kicked the bucket. Bye-bye, sayonara. Have fun in the Underworld, muchachos. So let's to a head count. We've got a third of these guys livin' like they've lived like that every day of their life. We've got another third that are torn between accepting fate and just letting their memories vanish and trying to solve the problem before it's irreversible. The last third all trying to fix the problem. People that didn't show up in the last universe showing up in this one. Five evil dudes who are trying to remain hidden and kill everyone all the same. Seven people ranging from the most pure of hearts to the... um, not so pure running around with ancient Egyptian artifacts that they don't even know the significance of. And - oh, did I mention the Yamis got split from their bodies?
In a seemingly peaceful world that only proves to be the veil covering a bundle of anarchy, how can one live with complete ease? Everything is falling apart around them and even the ability to stand strong is becoming more and more of an impossible feat. How can you possibly bring yourself to say, "But through all I've been through, I'M STILL STANDING."?
